Matthew 5:38-44

English only has one word for love – Greek and Hebrew has a much better way of distinguishing different types of love.

What does Godlike love look like: 1 Corinthians 13:1-8

Love is/always/does not/is not/keeps/never…… what?

1 Corinthians 13:11
The Love Bank – must be genuine to be effective.

Mark 12:28-33
Deuteronomy 6:4-5

You have to understand and live out LOVE!

Love priorities are what?

God has given us a recipe for love
Love revolution should be expressed in every relationship

Ecc. 4:9-12

1 John 3:11
1 John 4:7,8,11,12
1 John 3:16
1 John 4:11

Marriage is a foundational relationship of all relationships in the world.

Eph 5:25,28,33
Mark 12:29-31
Gal 5:13-15

Love your neighbor as yourself!

Healthy, Strong, Godly marriages are not the norm today.
root issue = we’re not living w/in God’s design for marriage

Goal:

  1. Show us God’s design of marriage
  2. Show us God’s design for men and women
  3. Define love according to God’s standards

These apply to all relationships, not just marriage

Eph 5, Christ is the groom and we are all the bride (church, people, etc)

Betrothal: 2 Cor 11:2, Eph 5:24
Ceremony Rev 19:7-9, 21:1-2

Marriages created to edify both men and women, Gen 2:18,24

  • Edified through companionship 1 Cor 7:1
  • Edified through pursuit John 17:20-23
    • event to lifetime of actions
  • Edified sexual relations 1 Cor 7:3-5

Matthew 22:37 – companionship; pursuit; mind and soul

Marriage created to glorify God

  • Adam & Eve – Gen 2:22-24
  • Christ & the Church – Rev 19:6-9

2 Cor 11:2 – Our marriages are to serve to the world, an intimate picture of Christ’s relationship to the Church.

Eph 5:22:33 – Marriage is a sacred covenant equal to Christ giving his life for us.

Hebrews 13:4-5 – God’s design is for women and men to observe abstinence until marriage so the blood covenant can be maintained.

Marriage is foundational for all of society
contract vs convenant

  • contract – formal agreement between two people, legalistic
  • covenant – binding agreement relational, value each other

God’s word always deals in covenant NOT contracts – Romans 4:14-15

Gen 9:8-11
Heb 9:11-15
Gen 2:22-24

lifelong covenant between Himself, one woman and one man Ecc 4:9-12

Beyond… the Urge to Quit

You can download this .mp3

Nehemiah 6 – There is a HUMAN desire to quit.

Nehemiah – “[Explained tough times for himself and ending with]. But, I prayed….”

The vision/mission is unlimited because we serve a limitless God, but Satan will do anything to attack us.

  • We cannot allow Satan to distract us from the vision
  • When the going got tough, Nehemiah prayed.

John 21:1-3,4-7,15-17

  1. Be faithful – inspite of the past(Philippians 3:13)
  2. Be faithful- in the present(John 21:18-20)
  3. Be faithful- in light of the future
    1. John 16:33
    2. 2 Timothy 3:1
    3. James 1:2
    4. 1 Peter 1:7
  • It’s harder to restart after quitting instead of getting beyond the urge to quit
  • We may not know what the future holds but we know WHO holds the future!!

Revelation 2:10b

  • Jesus paid w/his life to fulfill His purpose
    • there was a physical cost
    • there was an emotional cost
    • there was a spiritual cost
